Rent, the Musical
Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Rent has become a pop cultural phenomenon with songs that rock and a story that resonates with audiences of all ages. Based loosely on Puccini’s La Boheme, Rent follows a year in the life of eight artists and musicians with joy, sadness and comedy, as they struggle to make it in the big city—facing eviction, dealing with illness, homelessness, death and drugs, negotiating their dreams, finding their loves and living— one day at a time. Rent's message was made bittersweet when its young composer, Jonathan Larson, suffered a fatal aortic aneurysm the night of the first off-Broadway preview.
