The ten singers who compose Tallis Scholars — a four-decade institution — lead the field of Renaissance choral music with unimpeachable authority and immaculate craft. No ensemble is better at bringing the past to life. In the 16th century, the retinues of King Henry VIII of England and King Francis I of France met in a field near Calais for a friendly show of mutual power.

Cloth-of-gold tents were raised and red wine flowed from fountains. Rival choirs squared off at a majestic distance, with the French led by composer Jean Mouton and the English by William Cornysh. In Duke Chapel, a program of divine a cappella music written by Mouton and Cornysh proves yet again why the Tallis — with resplendent singing and incomparable erudition — continues to be the gold standard for sacred polyphony.

Alice Parker, world-renowned choral music conductor, arranger and composer, will conduct participants of the weekend's Choral Workshop in the Sunday morning service anthem and will lead the congregation in a hymn sing. This event is part of an entire weekend of events led by Alice Parker at Saint Francis United Methodist Church, also including a Community Sing and the Choral Workshop.

During the 8:30 AM service, Ms. Parker will conduct Cantamos (the Saint Francis youth choir) in "God Is Seen." During the 11:00 AM service, she will conduct St. Francis Choir and Choral Workshop participants in "Speak Peace" and "Hark I Hear the Harps Eternal." She will lead the congregation for a 20-30 minute hymn sing during both services.

In the final years of his life, Bach devoted much time to creating a musical setting of the Mass (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Agnus Dei), both by reworking some of his earlier music and by composing new music in a vast array of styles. The result is a monumental work that displays Bach’s consummate skill as a composer and stands as one of the icons of the choral repertoire. While many other performances feature large numbers of singers and instrumentalists, this concert gives listeners a chance to hear Bach’s music with just 34 singers and 20 instrumentalists. These reduced forces, more in line with what the composer intended, allow the listener to hear clearly the separate musical lines that Bach so ingeniously weaves together.

The Choral Society closes its season with a pair of premieres. Haydn’s Creation Mass (Schöpfungmesse), so called because the composer quotes a passage from his Creation oratorio, is one of his six great late masses, representing the pinnacle of his art. Springtime on Funen (Fynsk Forår) is Danish composer Carl Nielsen’s tuneful, folk-tinged tribute to his native island of Fyn (Funen). This cantata for soloists, chorus and orchestra greets the coming of spring to the island and portrays the everyday joys of life in the rustic community. The Durham Children’s Chorus will join CSD in the Nielsen cantata.

Building on the 2010 inaugural concert, Northwood High Choral instructor and organizer Marilyn Shugart and Chatham County music teachers have added a middle school component to this year’s festivities. A highlight will be four compositions by Triangle-based composer and clinician Andy Beck.

This year’s festival is made possible by a grant from the Youth Pro Musica Fund of Triangle Community Foundation; Shugart and the Chatham County School system are the recipients of the Fund’s first Raising Voices Grant, supporting creative choral music initiatives for area youth. Additional support for the concert is provided by the NHS Arts Education Foundation.

The varied program concludes with a work , Cesar Carrillo's Spanish language version of Silent Night.

The ensemble is a non-denominational, interfaith community chorus open to all singers.
