Clare College Choir

In addition to its primary task of leading chapel services, Clare College Choir gives frequent concerts, both in the United Kingdom and abroad. It has toured throughout Western and Eastern Europe, the United States, Russia, and the Middle and Far East. It performs in Britain’s major concert halls with many of the UK’s leading orchestra and regularly contributes to broadcasts on BBC Radio 3. Under the direction of Timothy Brown, it has become world-renowned for the range and flexibility of its choral sound and for its broad repertoire. A return tour to the U.S. in September, including the group’s performance for Music for a Great Space, will mark Brown’s last of 31 distinguished years as Director of Music.

The 85-voice chorus, with soloists and orchestra, will present the United States premiere of 'Missa Solemnis' opus 40 by Friedrich Kiel (1824-1885). Born in Puderbach (northwestern Germany) of poor parents, his lack of musical skills and education was overcome since he played piano by ear, improvised and composed; he was 30 years old before his Opus 1 was published. This 55-minute composition is dated March 1867 and is a beautifully sensitive rendering of the liturgy.

Cantari (Chapel Hill Community Chorus)

"Through the eyes of the poet, O that the learned poets might celebrate the marriage of words and music!" From the lyricism of William Shakespeare in love, to the witticism of Ogden Nash toasting the animal kingdom, Cantari (CHCC's small ensemble) presents music by a wide range of composers. The first portion of the program features works by Eric Whitacre, a phenomenon in classical music today whose Lux Arumque, launched a scant month ago, became an immediate hit on YouTube. The second half includes a rarely performed Britten piece and the only work Schumann wrote for a cappella double choir.

Grains of Time

The Grains of Time, the only all-male a cappella group at North Carolina State University, presents their annual Spring Concert, featuring a few traditional favorites along with a number of new pieces ranging from pop, oldies, rock, R&B and even hip-hop. For more than four decades, the Grains has performed wide variety of music with the use of just eight men’s voices, bridging contemporary collegiate a cappella with that of professional groups. A journey toward acceptance and tranformation. Brahms’ melancholy "Shicksalslied" (Song of Fate) for chorus and orchestra expresses mankind’s timeless struggle between destiny and fate. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s "Requiem," which premiered in 1985, is dedicated to his father; the work is best known for its “Pie Jesu,” a duet for soprano and boy soprano with chorus, that gained popular acclaim in Britain and the United States. The Symphony honors the memory of local composer Russell Peck, whose tone poem, "Peace Overture," was inspired by the struggle for peace in the Middle East.

Piedmont Chamber Singers

The opening concert of the season celebrates three great composers whose births or deaths are being remembered this year. The Singers open with two short pieces honoring the birth of Henry Purcell in 1609, then go on to Handel’s rousing Coronation Anthems to pay homage to the composer on the 250th anniversary of his death in 1759. The concert concludes with the “Lord Nelson” Mass by Haydn, who died 200 years ago, in 1809 (the same year that saw the birth of Mendelssohn, Lincoln and Darwin).
