SUMMARY:Oak City Voices present “Sing a Song of Shakespeare”
DESCRIPTION:Sing a Song of Shakespeare \nAll the wit, frivolity, and drama . . . set to music!\nSaturday, May 16, 2026 @ 5:00 PM\nUnitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh\n3313 Wade Avenue, Raleigh\n“The man that hath no music in himself,\nNor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,\nIs fit for treasons, stratagems and spoils;\nThe motions of his spirit are dull as night\nAnd his affections dark as Erebus:\nLet no such man be trusted.”\nLorenzo from the Merchant of Venice, Act 5, Scene 1\nOn May 16 at 5 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh, Oak City Voices, led by Russell McKinney, Artistic Director with Martha Abernethy, Pianist, presents Sing a Song of Shakespeare. \nMusic plays an important role in Shakespeare’s work, with around 100 songs across the 39 plays. Yet, almost none of the actual music from his day survives. Fortunately, in the 400 years hence, a great diversity of composers has been inspired to set his songs to music. With texts from seven plays and two sonnets, and composers such as Thomas Morley, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Amy Beach, and Sarah Quartel (and more), there is simply no reason to miss this concert and risk being “fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.” Trust us.\nDirge for Fidele will be performed in Memory of Oak City Voices member, Barbara Barnett.\nTickets are available at https://theoakcityvoices.org/events-tickets ( https://theoakcityvoices.org/events-tickets )  or at the door. Doors open at 4:30 pm; general seating.\n \n
