Pepper Choplin: Together We Sing

ONCE UPON A TREE is a dramatic telling of the events of the last days of Christ’s earthly life. Narrated by Luke the physician, portrayed by Jeff Brooks, the choir propels the action by taking different dramatic roles. The work was performed in 2001 at Meymandi Concert Hall. The group was only the second choir to sing in the brand new facility.

This same work was performed in Meymandi Concert Hall n 2001. The group was only the second choir to sing in the brand new facility.

Since then, there have been 14 concerts of Choplin’s original cantatas performed at Meymandi,  involving singers from over 35 churches and groups.

This year we will have about 250 singers and a 30-piece professional orchestra. Almost all of the players are part of the Hayes Barton Baptist Church Festival Orchestra.

Most of the singers come from area churches and Cary Community Choir. Others are coming from Chicago, IL, South Boston, VA; Mooresville, NC; and Elkin, NC.

Special guest will be the remarkable tenor, Calvin Carter who will sing two favorite spirituals.

A favorite part of these events has been when the choir and audience fills the hall with the sound of three hymns of the season plus “Hallelujah Chorus”.
