Choral Society of Durham: Verdi Requiem
The sound of Verdi’s Requiem is larger than life: 8 trumpets crackle with the thrilling sounds of the imminent Day of Judgement, while the huge orchestra explodes thunderously in reply. Gorgeous operatic solos dramatically and eloquently express feelings in the face of death and loss. The terrifying whirling of the Dies Irae theme of Verdi’s Requiem is probably most familiar, heard as it often is in movies and marching band performances, but the quiet moments of hope and prayer are equally profound. The solo quartet includes two singers who have sung with CSD recently (tenor Timothy Sparks and baritone Grant Youngblood) and two who will sing with us for the first time (soprano Indira Mahajan and mezzo Janara Kellerman). We are delighted that Mallarmé Music will once again serve as our orchestra for this performance.
