Durham Savoyards Host Public Sing-Along of The Gondoliers
The Durham Savoyards, now in their 60th year of delighting local audiences with Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, are preparing The Gondoliers for March 2024. As part of the run-up to auditions in December—and for the sheer fun of it—The Savoyards will host a sing-along of the score to kick off their season on Sunday, Nov. 12, 2pm, at The Durham Arts Council, 120 Morris Street, Durham (IBM Room).
All are welcome! It’s a low-pressure community event intended to reacquaint singers with the score. We’ll use the Schirmer score and will have at least a few to borrow/buy, but if you have any edition, bring it. The Schirmer vocal score is available as a .pdf download at www.imslp.org, should you wish to use a laptop or tablet.
The Gondoliers tells the whimsical story of a royal betrothal arranged decades earlier, now complicated by uncertainty over who was the intended husband. Add to that a spicy dose of satire and a Venetian setting and you end up with a musical that the composers themselves called their finest achievement.
