“The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems and spoils;
The motions of his spirit are dull as night
And his affections dark as Erebus:
Let no such man be trusted.”
Lorenzo from the Merchant of Venice, Act 5, Scene 1
On May 16 at 5 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh, Oak City Voices, led by Russell McKinney, Artistic Director with Martha Abernethy, Pianist, presents Sing a Song of Shakespeare.
Music plays an important role in Shakespeare’s work, with around 100 songs across the 39 plays. Yet, almost none of the actual music from his day survives. Fortunately, in the 400 years hence, a great diversity of composers has been inspired to set his songs to music. With texts from seven plays and two sonnets, and composers such as Thomas Morley, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Amy Beach, and Sarah Quartel (and more), there is simply no reason to miss this concert and risk being “fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.” Trust us.
Dirge for Fidele will be performed in Memory of Oak City Voices member, Barbara Barnett.
Tickets are available at https://theoakcityvoices.org/events-tickets or at the door. Doors open at 4:30 pm; general seating.
